On riding through loose sand.

The other day I was riding in the national forest near the house. I saw a whole three people whilst out there. I was visited by quail, many lizards, and a pine snake that raced me along the trail.

Spring and rain bring so many pretty flowers that deserve a moment of study. I never had noticed the number of Yucca plants. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise every where else on this latitude that isn't surrounded by water is a desert.

The day was hot, dry, and dusty a prefect set of ingredients to make loose sand. The people that passed me were riding the trail anticlockwise, I came to find it is a sign you have chosen to work the trail from the hard side. Meaning steep climbs up mountains of loose sand and pine tree roots.

I realized my focus was where I didn't want to go and I had to make a conscious effort to look at where I wanted to go. As I forgot the things I wished to avoid there was less riding the brakes and more pushing and pulling the pedals. It was as if I rose above the obstacles and flew. The hill wasn't as steep, the sand firmer, and in-spite of myself I smiled.

Amazing how we find what we need when we stop looking for it.
